Becoming a Man
His dad taught him the game when he was five; just as his dad had done and now
he was going to carry on the tradition and teach his son how to play. His boy
had just turned five and it was a nice spring day, the perfect kind of day for
learning how to play basketball.
He handed him the ball and told him to dribble it. His boy bounced it and it
went flying. He laughed and told him that was all right. It can be hard in the
beginning.
He showed him how to dribble and how to shoot. Then he lowered the hoop and told
him to give it a try. After several failed attempts the boy was ready to give
up, but his dad told him to give it another try. This time he made it and his
face lit up with a smile and his eyes twinkled.
He had just become a man. He had learned how to play basketball from his dad.
