My Best Friend

My best friend in high school was Chuck McDoogle. He was tall, almost 6’3”. He said it was because of his height that he had to play basketball. I wasn’t quite as tall, only about 5’11”. He said that was fine. I could still be a good player.

We would play everyday after school during the off season. We both were on the high school team. He got to play more than me, but he was better, so it was okay.

When we played at home he would teach me to play like him. He was sort of my idol, but I didn’t ever tell him that. He did know he was my best friend, though.

One day he didn’t come to school. I thought it was weird because we would always tell each other if we would be missing school. I barely made it through the day, unable to stop thinking about why he would miss school. When I got home my mom stopped me at the back door. She told me that Chuck’s dad got called to serve in the military and the family had to move today. They were already gone. I didn’t even get to say goodbye. Mom said Chuck left something for me. She handed me his favorite basketball. I had to choke back tears. I still have that ball.
